We are finally in our new home and we couldn’t be happier in our new surroundings. But, sick of unpacking, we decided we needed quick overnight break in the high country. Off we went to Summit County last week the next day, we got out early for a quick hike on the Shrine Mountain Trail (altitude 11,000 feet). The views up there are glorious and it’s a path well known for alpine wildflowers. But in this unusual year, many blooms have already come and gone — a short bloom season owing to drought. There was still plenty to enjoy although I could see faded louseworts, Jacob’s Ladder, and other remnants. When the trail crossed a stream, I spotted a Fringed Grass of Parnassus. (What a mouthful! But it’s a fancy looking little blossom, so, there ya go.) I saw one last year at Yankee Boy Basin. A new species for me. I probably shreiked with delight, because that is my standard reacation. Seeing one again was like stumbling across an old pal. The recognition, the surprise, the heart rate uptick, a little tpulse of joy in the solar plexis. I don’t know if that’s an odd reaction. I don’t know if other flower seekers take such sightings in stride. So it made me wonder: does every hobbyist have experiences like this? Do car people and quilters get a little light headed when they see a favorite car on display or see a cherished pattern at an exhibit? Do bird watchers tweet with happiness over a beloved warbler? If you have a hobby that can ignite that “old friend” feeling, you’ve have good life.
